File extension RAM stands for RealMediA Metafile. These files are used by RealMedia player as shortcuts to other RealMedia files that actually contain compressed audio and video data. Real Media Player used to be very popular in the early days of the Internet for streaming video and audio over modem connections because it provided superior compression. However this was at a cost of much lower media quality.
File extension RAM is used by RealPlayer to play offline or online audio files. This file extension can be opened on various platforms including PC, Mac, and Linux. Most files can be seen with .ra extension which is associated with it.
Some websites require the installation of RealPlayer Plug-in before it can properly open some contents of the pages. Most of these websites are internet radios that transmit real time broadcast using RealPlayer. These contents are links with RAM file extensions that streams audio files allowing a user to play the file while it is downloading.
Real Audio (RA) developed by Real Networks, Inc. was the original file extension for audio files processed with Real compression algorithm. As the introduction of new file formats, the company resorted to Real Audio Media (RAM) that is commonly seen as links for web pages.
Through RealPlayer a streamed audio file cannot be saved. However, with other unofficial players it is possible to save a file that can be converted to a different format posing copyright threats.
RealNetworks RealPlayer and web browser such as Safari, Internet Explorer, and Firefox with the RealPlayer Plug-in can play files of this extension. There are also several unofficial players that can play this extension too. These include Real Alternative, Jet Audio, and MPlayer.
